Shoulder Conditions and Treatments

Many shoulder problems are caused by soft tissue problems in the shoulder. Using the shoulder too much without proper rest can cause the soft tissue injuries to worsen.

For example athletes and those working in jobs requiring manual labor frequently experience shoulder pain and injuries. Some of the more common shoulder injuries include dislocations, separations, tendinitis, bursitis, torn rotator cuffs, frozen shoulder and fractures. Shoulder injuries can cause pain in one spot, in a larger area, or in some cases down the arm.

Hand & Wrist Conditions and Treatments

When a problem takes place in the hand, care must be given to all the different types of tissues that make function of the hand possible. Overuse and repetitive motion injuries are very common in the hand and wrist. Sports-related injuries are also prevalent.

If the patient needs surgery, then most of these conditions can be treated on an outpatient basis by Dr. Nelson.

Meet Dr. Johnny T. Nelson

Dr. Johnny T. Nelson is a Raleigh native and a second-generation orthopaedic surgeon. He graduated magna cum laude and phi beta kappa from the University of Dallas, where he played starting flanker for the university’s rugby football club. He earned his medical degree at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he graduated at the top of his class and was inducted into the AOA medical honors society.

Between medical school and residency, Dr. Nelson devoted a year to research at the Laboratory for Regenerative Technologies in Orthopaedic Surgery at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, which resulted in numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals. After completing orthopaedic surgery residency at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan, Dr. Nelson was selected for a fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh.
